ECOLOGY

Responsible management of coal ports is based on continuous improvement of port environmental safety measures and sabing of our country's nature — replenishment of marine bioresources, protection of marine life, cleanliness of coastal areas.

UMMC Seaport and Railway Projects Service works only with specialized ports that were originally technologically designed and equipped with advanced coal handling equipment. Specialized coal ports use technologies where coal is transshipped using car dumpers, belt conveyor systems, and ship loading machines. The ports use powerful dust suppression and wind and dust protection systems, as well as sewage treatment plants. JSC Rosterminalugol and JSC Vostochny Port have made commitments to the environment, are compliant with international standards. Environmental safety of ports is carried out in accordance with the ISO 14001:2004 standard " environmental management Systems. Transshipment of cargo at the seaport".

UMMC Seaport and Railway Projects Service and its managed companies implement annual environmental action plans, including the realization of a comprehensive environmental program. Over the past 5 years investments in this area have exceeded 5.8 billion rubles.

At the coal terminals of JSC Vostochny Port and JSC Rosterminalugol, round-the-clock environmental monitoring is carried out, accredited specialized laboratories and environmental engineers work, powerful aspiration units for air purification and water treatment facilities for runoff and stormwater that purify them to the level of fisheries indicators are constantly functioning.

Environmental projects

The replenishment of the sea bioresources
By order of JSC Vostochny Port, kelp, trepangs, scallops and chum salmon are grown annually in specialized aquaculture enterprises. All grown marine life is released into the coastal waters of Peter the Great Bay, on the shores where the port is located. In November 2016, at the initiative and expense of Rosterminalugol JSC, more than 1,300 two-year-old kumzhi fish were released into the Svir river.
The Baltic ringed seal
The Baltic ringed seal has no more than 200 ringed seals remaining in the Gulf of Finland. In 2017JSC Rosterminalugol starts a project to protect the ringed seal, which is the port's mascot. During the year, in constant cooperation with ecologists and the center for saving pinnipeds of the Leningrad region, events will be held to help the seal. To account for species, it is planned to purchase camera traps, chip animals to track their location, and purchase feed and medicines for injured and sick animals located in the pinniped rescue center. Ecologists and volunteers from the UMMC seaport and railway projects and JSC Rosterminalugol are planning an expedition to the seal habitat to count individuals and environmental monitoring of the territory.
Partnership with the city administrations
In December 2016, JSC Vostochny Port and JSC Rosterminalugol signed five-year agreements on cooperation in the field of improving environmental safety and environmental education with the administrations of municipal bodies of Primorsky region and the Leningrad region. The companies presented an example of synergy between municipal governments and businesses for the environmental protection of citizens and nature.
Eco-marathon
JSC "Vostochny Port" and JSC "Rosterminalugol" hold annual festivals called "Ecomarathon". Traditionally, "Ecomarathons" are held in several stages from May to September, and their participants are children and adults from the cities closest to the ports Nakhodka and Kingisepp. The festival program includes environmental programs, volunteer projects with environmentalists, environmental lessons for schoolchildren where they are taught about the rules of behavior in the forest and on the water, excursions to natural parks and reserves, and creative competitions. As part of the "Ecomarathons" planting landscaping of schools and streets of cities, planting seedlings of coniferous and deciduous trees is carried out.
